Can you get pregnant from fingering?

About a month ago I fingered my girlfriend. I had just been to the toilet and had washed my hands and dried them thoroughly with no soap. I then fingered her, however, I am really worried there may have been some precum on my hands from when I went to the toilet. Realistically, is there even a chance of her being pregnant? I have read some places saying that you can't but a few other places saying you can. My girlfriend is on the combined pill as well.

Hi there,

It’s sometimes possible for someone to become pregnant without intercourse but it’s quite unlikely. It's very rare and the fact that your girlfriend also takes a contraceptive pill makes the chances of being pregnant extremely low.

It's not possible for me to say if someone will get pregnant or not. Only the people involved can know if there’s a chance or not - but I can talk about some of the ways it might happen and some of the ways it definitely won't.

To become pregnant semen needs to go into the vagina. This could happen in different ways. Anytime a penis goes into a vagina without a condom or diaphragm, there’s a risk of pregnancy. It doesn't happen every time so it's not definite someone will become pregnant if semen has gone inside their vagina. Fingering someone won't get them pregnant if there isn’t semen on your hands.

It's always good to wash your hands before having sex if possible. If you’re going to be touching sensitive and intimate parts of someone's body then it's important to make sure you have clean hands. You washed your hands after going to the toilet so it doesn't seem likely you had semen on your hands.

The contraceptive pill is one of a few different types of contraception available for women. You can read more about different types of contraception on Brook's website. The best way to find out for sure if you’re pregnant is through a test. You can get a free test from lots of places – Brook has more about this too.

Thank you for your letter. I hope this has helped, but if you need to talk more our counsellors are here for you.
