Guilt

Hi Sam

i feel so guilty that i have cheated on 2 of my mock exams. The techer used papers that had the markscheme released and i couldnt help myself and looked before my exam. I feel like a failure and feel so guilty i feel sick. Im so disappointed in myself as I am capable of doing well and been getting good grades all year. I didnt want to fail but now i realise i have failed myself anyway. Our teacher has found out and said it is obvious people have looked at the markscheme (im not the only one) and making us retake another exam. I will be happy to do this so i can prove myself however i still feel so angry at myself. I feel like I have let myself down.

Please can you give me some advice

Thank you

Sam

Hi there,

We all have a sense of what’s right and what’s wrong but sometimes we make mistakes. Nobody is perfect and we all do things wrong sometimes, letting ourselves down. If you can learn from these mistakes then it wasn’t a wasted experience.

Stressful situations like exams can make people do something that they wouldn’t normally. This could be because you're not thinking clearly and didn’t think at the time what the consequences would be.

Making mistakes is part of being human and a way of learning that helps you to do things differently in the future. The important thing is not to make the same mistake twice. Remembering how you feel now and understanding why you made this choice is really important to helping you make a different choice next time.

What’s happened has happened, now it's important to find a way to forgive yourself for the mistake and move on. One way of helping you to do this could be to apologise for the mistake.  It can also help to get it off your chest by talking it through with someone you trust. This could be a close friend, a family member, a teacher.

You can also always contact Childline to share your thoughts and feelings with a counsellor.

Take care,

Sam
