Does this count as cyber bullying?

Hi,
I was wondering if cyber bullying counts even if what people put on the internet doesn't include your name? I mean everyone at school knows its about you, or if they use a code name for you then is it really cyber bullying?
Thanks for reading this :)

Hi there,

Thanks for your message.
It sounds like you’re confused about whether you‘re being cyber bullied or not. Cyber bullying is when a person or a group of people uses the internet, mobile phones, online games or any other kind of digital technology to threaten, tease, upset or humiliate someone else. If people are writing nasty comments about you on the internet, then this is still cyber bullying, even if they don’t use your name.

No-one has the right to bully you in any way. You deserve support to stop this from happening. You mentioned that everyone at school knows what’s being written is about you. Your school has a responsibility to ensure that bullying doesn’t happen. Perhaps you could think about speaking to a teacher in your school for more support and advice. Maybe you have a friend that could go with you to speak to a teacher if you feel that would help.

You don’t have to bottle this up and there are people who will want to support you, including ChildLine. Perhaps you could speak to a family member or even a friend’s mum? They may be able to give you more support and advice about this.

There is lots of information about bullying in Explore. Another useful place to look for advice is the Beat Bullying website. They have an online chat service called Cyber Mentors, where you can talk to young people who have been trained to help those who are being bullied.

If you would like to talk some more about how you feel, you’re welcome to send the counsellors an email, log in for a 1-2-1 chat or call for free on 0800 1111. You may also get some useful advice on the message boards where other young people share their stories.

I hope this helps. Take care

Sam
