People bully me becuase of things I likd

Dear Sam,

I wanted to ask about how I should act in this situation. I am a massive kpop fan and i have a collection of albums which i treasure. The problem is that my classmates make fun of me saying its dumb and weird. Its making me feel excluded and annoyed and atops me from focusing. I am 12 by the way. What should I do?

Sam

Hi there,

Everyone has something they really like, such as a hobby, a type of music or a certain lifestyle. The things we love are an important part of who we are. It's not okay for anyone to make you feel bad for being yourself.

People can have many different interests. To someone who hasn't been around your hobby or music style before, it might seem strange and unfamiliar. When things are new or unknown, some people don't know what to say or do and they can behave in a mean or hurtful way. Try not to take it too personally and remember that they’re the ones who are missing out by not being open to new experiences.

There’s nothing wrong with loving the things that you do. It's really important to keep being yourself. As you get older it can become easier to be yourself as you gain more confidence. By the time you become an adult you realise that everyone has some interests. Usually the people who’re not ashamed to show what they’re passionate about have the most confidence.

Something else to remember is that you’ are also not going to be alone. Whatever you’re into, there will be other people who feel the same as you. Finding safe spaces and groups with other people who share your passions is a great way to make new friends and get the most out of it.

I hope this has helped - you might want to post on our message boards to see if there are other people who have had a similar experience. Our counsellors are always there to talk as well.

Thanks for your letter.

Take care.

Sam
